You’ve been to a few Boomers’ singles dances and gone on a couple of miserable blind date set-ups. It’s beginning to dawn on you that your daughter may be right, it’s time to go online. I know the proposition is daunting but this could be a fun new time of adventure and self-discovery in your life!

There are many advantages to online dating: You have access to many more potential beaus than you’d run into during the course of your daily life. Many online dating sites offer personality and interest matching. Online dating offers you the opportunity to get to know someone before meeting in person.

Dating Online- Don't Overshare! A Guide to What Is TMI (1)

There are a few general rules that you should be mindful of when starting this journey. Don’t overshare. Here is our guide to what is too much information online.

1. Do not share your address, phone number, place of employment. Create a separate email address for online dating. Most of the men you will be talking to online are just like you but you do want to protect yourself nonetheless. Remember, these men are still strangers for now.

2. Do not reveal information about your personal financial situation. This is no one’s business but your own. Depending on your circumstances, you don’t want to seem like a gold-digger or you need to protect yourself from opportunists.

3. Do not explain why your last relationship ended. A laundry list of your ex’s flaws and mistakes has no place at this stage of the game (if ever). This is a big no-no in a live first date as well- you do not want to come across as whiny or full of self-pity.

4. Do not divulge the inner dysfunction of your family and friends – your impossible daughter-in-law, obnoxious neighbor, etc. You’re trying to draw someone in not scare someone away. The purpose of communicating online is to establish an initial connection not to build an entire relationship.

With these safety tips, you’ll be well on your way to finding someone to meet face-to-face.
