It is late night and the ice cream craving suddenly hits but when you check the freezer you’re all out. Don’t fret! You can make your own homemade ice cream in a freezer bag in minutes!

It is a simple and quick process and you probably have all the ingredients you need around the house.

What You’ll Need:

  • 1 cup half and half or milk (you can also milk substitutes like soy, coconut, almond, etc.)
  • 1/2 teaspoon vanilla extract (you can also use vanilla bean)
  • 2 tablespoons sugar (or to taste)
  • 1/2 cup kosher or rock salt
  • 1 pint sized freezer bag
  • 1 gallon-sized freezer bag
  • ice cubes
  • Your choice of mix-ins and toppings (e.g. chocolate chips, berries, cookie dough, etc.)

Step 1

Combine milk, vanilla and sugar in the pint sized freezer bag and seal tightly. You can double up the bag to prevent leakage.

Step 2

Fill the gallon-sized freezer bag with ice cubes, about 1/4 – 1/2 full, then add the salt.

Step 3

Place the bag with the milk mixture in the bag of ice and seal.

Step 4

Shake the bag for 5-10 minutes until desired consistency is reached. You can check consistency by feeling the mixture. If ice cream is still soft after the recommended time, keep shaking, it’ll get there.

Step 5

Remove the small bag from the larger bag, rinse and wipe the bag clean. Add in your favourite mix-ins and enjoy!
