A Denver paralegal, named Lauren, has been pregnant for 260 weeks and 5 days and 9 hours. What in the world is going on here?
As any of us who have been pregnant can tell you, by 9 months, you are definitely ready for baby to come out! Pregnancy is a beautiful time in your life but the unpleasant side effects like restless legs, itchy skin, constipation and hemorrhoids get old pretty quickly.
So, why would this woman choose to remain pregnant for 5 years? Simple. Neither she nor her husband have paid family leave through their employers. She’s saving up her vacation days to have her baby.
Of course, staying pregnant for 5 years is medically impossible. This satirical video from the National Partnership for Women and Families is shedding light on an important issue in a comedic way.
86% of US workers have no paid leave through their employers and only 4 states have paid family and medical leave laws. Among 41 industrialized nations, the U.S. is the only country that does not mandate any paid leave for new parents (Source: Pew Research Center).
The National Partnership for Women and Families urges us to: “Ask your members of Congress to watch the video and then stand up for a robust national paid family and medical leave program.”
